Artelia commissioned to monitor the Bassin-à-Bois park development project in Montreal

The City of Montreal’s Service des grands parcs, du Mont-Royal et des sports has mandated our Urban Infrastructures – Realization team, supported by a multidisciplinary collaboration, to supervise the Bassin-à-Bois park development works. This new multi-purpose public space will offer year-round activities, and will be located at the corner of William and Guy streets, on the banks of the Lachine Canal in the Griffintown district.

Access to green spaces within the Griffintown neighborhood has increased in recent years, with the addition, for example, of Parc du Bassin-à-Gravier, which was the first park to offer a playground and water features in the neighborhood in 2016. Aspiring to offer all its residents diversified living environments conducive to families, seniors, young people and citizens of all backgrounds, the City of Montreal plans to continue greening this neighborhood, and the development of Bassin-à-Bois will be a fine example of this intention. In addition to commemorating the historic heritage of the site and the neighbourhood, the development is designed to respect the environment, biodiversity and urban ecology.

The project will involve a number of works, including archaeological interventions related to the Lachine Canal, soil decontamination, the installation of new urban infrastructures, the construction of a refrigerated outdoor skating rink and a technical pavilion with services, the development of new pedestrian walkways, the addition of lighting and urban mobility, as well as the planting of vegetation, including 96 trees and 1,700 square metres of shrub and herbaceous plantings.

A project with multiple coordination challenges

Drawing on their experience with the various projects carried out in the Griffintown district, and more specifically having participated in the design of the Bassin-à-Bois project in 2022, our experts will be well placed to implement strategies to deal with the issues and challenges that will arise in this project. For example, managing the project’s many stakeholders will require quality communications and coordination with all the parties involved, including the various city authorities, the borough, the CSEM, Energir, Bell/Vidéotron, Parks Canada, and so on. The “Charte montréalaise des chantiers” will also be implemented to minimize the impact of the work on users and businesses, and environmental monitoring of contaminated soil will be carried out in accordance with “Traces Québec”.

Supported by the invaluable multidisciplinary collaboration of their colleagues in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Structural, Transportation and Traffic Control, Surveying and Geomatics, as well as three subcontractors, the Urban Infrastructures – Construction team will provide all services and deliverables related to work supervision.

We’re proud to be contributing to another major improvement for the Griffintown neighborhood. This park has long been awaited by residents, who will be able to enjoy the refrigerated outdoor skating rink as early as fall 2025.
