Founded in 1827, the University of Toronto has over 90,000 students, making it one of the largest universities in North America. As part of its plan for a carbon positive campus, it will be transforming a large part of its energy and public infrastructure, including four off-campus facilities for which Artelia has been commissioned to carry out a feasibility study on renewable energy production.

University officials called on our experts in solar energy and renewable technologies to carry out studies to determine the carbon offset system that would enable them to achieve their carbon positive objective. While ensuring respect for the environment and the communities involved, they examined capital costs, operation and maintenance costs, the grid’s emissions factor, carbon tax, grid electricity rates and virtual net billing possibilities. In the end, they were able to propose a cost-effective and promising carbon offset system.
