To better respond to the challenges of heavy rainfall and sustainable management of urban environments, the City of Montreal has transformed the Sainte-Marie district with an innovative project. Located in a natural basin, this area is regularly exposed to flooding caused by heavy rainfall. The redevelopment of Des Royaux Park and Larivière Street features integrated solutions, such as surface retention basins holding up to 900 m³ of water and a drainage network to manage runoff from upstream areas. This project contributes to the city’s goal of adding 8500 m² of drainage infrastructure, a unique model of environmental resilience.

Artelia’s experts, in partnership with Provencher-Roy, played a key role in this project. They redeveloped the surface of the skatepark in Des Royaux Park to serve as a retention basin during storms, and transformed Larivière Street into a multifunctional sponge street. Work included the installation of bioretention basins, a new storm pipe and an energy-efficient lighting system. By promoting stormwater management and greening, this project illustrates the importance of sustainable solutions to climate challenges, while enriching citizens’ quality of life.
