The project to redevelop the Bonaventure Expressway at the entrance to downtown Montreal is a major reconstruction initiative spanning one kilometer in a highly urbanized, high-traffic-density environment. The main objective was to replace the existing pile structure, built in 1966, with an at-grade urban boulevard. This redevelopment reorganized the strategic entrance to the city center, recreating the urban fabric of the area and revitalizing this main access point. Technical challenges included coordinating the relocation of utilities, integrating new storm, sanitary and water pipes with existing networks, planning and managing storm drainage, as well as managing traffic during construction and safely abating the elevated roadway.

As part of this project, our team of specialists in transport and intelligent mobility developed innovative solutions to optimize traffic flow and safety. We designed an intelligent monitoring and control system for traffic lights and variable message signs. These systems react in real time to data collected by queuing and incident detectors, reducing the risk of collisions, particularly during peak periods.

To achieve this, we first carried out an in-depth traffic study to understand mobility management needs. This study enabled us to define a dynamic management strategy, identify conditions and triggers for management scenarios, and validate our solutions through traffic simulations. We then configured this solution on the TransSuite platform, and tested dynamic management in virtual mode at the Urban Mobility Management Center (UMMC) to ensure its effectiveness. Finally, we made dynamic management operational and carried out post-implementation monitoring to continuously adjust and optimize the system.

Thanks to our expertise, we helped transform the entrance to Montreal into a modern, functional urban space, ensuring fluid, safe traffic management for all users.
