Coopérative d’Habitation Le Petit Quartier’s ambition was to build a new residential model in Sherbrooke, focused on affordability and the creation of a distinctive community. Inspired by Ross Chapin’s Pocket Neighborhoods concept, this unique homeowners’ cooperative project features small single-family homes grouped into blocks, linked by a network of paths and surrounded by shared green spaces. By favoring a compact, integrated design, the environmental constraints of steep slopes and wetlands have been transformed into opportunities, allowing 60% of the site to be preserved as a conservation area. The project also includes community and collective buildings, designed to encourage exchanges between neighbors and offer a convivial living environment, in symbiosis with nature. Driven by an inclusive and ambitious vision, Le Petit Quartier goes beyond its status as a simple real estate project, embodying innovation and creating a sustainable and resilient environment.

Artelia’s experts have been partners with the Cooperative since the beginning of the project, and have been involved in all the planning stages, from the characterization study of the natural environment to project management, including the design of the development plan, applications for environmental authorizations, civil, lighting and landscaping plans and specifications, and the integration of public utilities. The complexity of the approval required creativity and perseverance.

Today, Le Petit Quartier radiates far beyond Sherbrooke, attracting interest from many regions of Quebec. Le Petit Quartier has become a benchmark for sustainable development, providing solutions to current challenges and a place where collective aspirations meet to shape a common future.
