The Manic-5 PA generating station, part of the prestigious Manicouagan River hydroelectric complex, is a feat of engineering in the heart of the vast landscapes of the Côte-Nord region. This major development, inaugurated in the 1970s, is based on varied and complex rock formations. Faced with changing site conditions, and to ensure the safety of workers and equipment, a series of inspections highlighted areas requiring in-depth study. The aim of this project was to assess the existing rock slopes and structures in several strategic areas of the plant, while identifying the potential risks associated with their stability.
Artelia was commissioned to carry out a detailed analysis and propose recommendations tailored to the site’s unique geotechnical challenges. Our team inspected six separate zones, collected precise geological and structural data, and carried out complex analyses using specialized software such as RocPlane® and Dips®. In addition to assessing the stability of existing structures, we drew up concrete action plans, ranging from monitoring the work to installing new anchoring systems. Thanks to a rigorous methodology and cutting-edge tools, we helped ensure the durability and safety of one of Quebec’s most emblematic hydroelectric infrastructures.
Driven by our values of technical excellence, proximity to clients and entrepreneurial spirit, we are more than ever determined to be a company that is useful to the world and to people, and that contributes to have a positive impact on the environment and society.
