The new 735 kV Micoua-Saguenay line project is a key component of Quebec’s power transmission network. Spanning 262 km, the line connects Micoua substation on the Côte-Nord to Saguenay substation in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. This major project, involving the construction of 588 towers and the installation of 3,144 km of cable in 10 sections, will help to meet the growing demand for electricity over the coming years. Throughout the project, particular attention has been paid to optimizing the route and managing environmental impact, while prioritizing public consultation to ensure the safety of local communities.

As part of this project, Artelia was commissioned by Hydro-Québec to carry out in-depth geotechnical studies on the foundations of more than a hundred towers located in sections 3 and 4. We conducted field investigations and laboratory tests to characterize the geotechnical conditions at each site. Our teams recommended data for the selection of the most suitable foundations, taking into account specific geotechnical risks such as slope stability, liquefaction risk and erosion. Recommendations were also provided to ensure the safety of excavation work and to prevent environmental impacts.

As the contractor’s laboratory for Section 6, our materials engineering team ensured quality control of materials and monitoring of civil engineering works. We validated the Quality and Inspection and Testing Plan, which was updated throughout the project to monitor progress and apply any necessary corrective measures. Our services also included the validation and approval of quality documentation, including execution procedures, technical data sheets and material specifications requiring verification. Our team also supervised work on site, carrying out regular inspections and ensuring that materials complied with the required standards. Our expertise ensured the durability and safety of the infrastructure, while meeting the quality requirements defined in the project’s quality plan.
