Our Civil Engineering Structures and Road Infrastructure teams have been awarded a major contract for the design and supervision of renovation work on Le Gardeur Bridge, which connects Repentigny and Montreal. The contract covers the rehabilitation of the bridge deck and related structures over a length of nearly 1 km, including the structures over the Rivière des Prairies and Route 138 on Île Bourdon. Our Traffic Maintenance, Geotechnical, Environment, Materials Control, Lighting, Surveying, and Data Acquisition teams will also be involved in this multidisciplinary contract.
The Le Gardeur Bridge is an important road link, carrying nearly 20,000 vehicles daily between Repentigny and the island of Montreal. Its multi-purpose path is also the only link for pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge thus plays a crucial role in regional connectivity, and this repair project has been a concern for the cities of Repentigny and Montreal for several years.
The project stems from recommendations made between 2016 and 2024 to ensure the safety and sustainability of the infrastructure. Artelia will be in charge of the project from start to finish, with design work beginning during spring 2025, supervision of the work taking place in 2026-2027, and acceptance inspections occurring in 2028.
The work included in the mandate comprises the repair of pavement across bridges, roadways, and the multi-purpose path, along with the reconstruction of curbs and restraint systems. It also involves repairs to lighting structures, retaining walls, and the portico, as well as the upgrading of drainage systems, road markings, and signage.
The services provided as part of this mandate include conducting damage surveys and geotechnical studies, performing environmental assessments and material characterization, preparing plans and specifications, managing traffic and calls for tenders, and ensuring technical supervision both in the office and on-site.
Traffic management during construction will be one of the most important issues to address and will require careful planning to limit the impact of disruptions. Our teams’ expertise in maintaining traffic flow will be crucial to ensuring success. In a dense urban environment with variable vehicle and public transportation flows, our specialists will implement rigorous planning to limit disruptions. They will ensure that one lane in each direction is maintained at all times, optimize work schedules—particularly nighttime paving—and propose appropriate scenarios for certain daytime interventions. Their expertise will also make it possible to preserve access to the multi-purpose trail and the agricultural residence on Bourdon Island, thanks to targeted mitigation measures and close coordination with stakeholders.
We are pleased to take on this project, which represents a significant investment in mobility between Montreal and Repentigny, directly benefiting thousands of citizens every day.
Driven by our values of technical excellence, proximity to clients and entrepreneurial spirit, we are more than ever determined to be a company that is useful to the world and to people, and that contributes to have a positive impact on the environment and society.
