New Terminal for Consolidated Thompson

Optimization of port operations for ore storage and shipment by sea.

During the development of the Bloom Lake iron ore mine near Fermont, Consolidated Thompson (CLM) undertook a strategic project to meet the expected increase in production, estimated at 8 million tonnes of ore per year. To efficiently transport this ore to world markets, a new terminal was built in Sept-Îles. In addition to unloading railcars, the terminal had to store the ore and load ships for sea shipment. The terminal’s integrated infrastructure, including rail and advanced handling facilities, was designed to optimize the entire mining logistics chain, while minimizing environmental impact by automating handling and avoiding equipment with high CO2 emissions.

The Artelia team was commissioned to carry out the project, managing engineering, design and construction from start to finish. We developed the preliminary and final plans, supervised procurement and orchestrated all work on site. In addition to rigorous environmental monitoring, we integrated state-of-the-art equipment such as belt and tubular conveyors, a reclaimer/scraper, a railcar tumbler, and a ship loader. This project illustrates our expertise in managing large-scale projects that comply with strict quality, safety and sustainability standards, while meeting the needs of the mining industry in a context of reduced carbon footprint.
