Improved facilities for greater handling capacity.

The Société ferroviaire et portuaire de Pointe-Noire (SFPPN) is a public organization that acts as an intermodal hub for the export of iron ore from the North Shore and Newfoundland-Labrador. Its facilities enable the annual export of over 10 million tonnes of ore, and include more than 34 km of track, railcar loading and unloading, warehousing and handling facilities, as well as three deep-water industrial docks, contributing to billions of dollars in economic spin-offs for Quebec.

Wishing to improve its rail-port intermodal handling capacity for transporting ores from various mines to the ports of Sept-Îles, SFPPN increased the size of its 160 wagon trains to 240 wagon trains.  Our teams were commissioned to design and supervise the work to add and extend track and improve facilities at the Sept-Îles-Pointe-Noire dock. The project optimized operations and operating costs, maximized transshipment costs and minimized greenhouse gas emissions from the 2.5 km-long trains.
