The Waasigan transmission line project is a 50/50 partnership between Hydro One and 9 Aboriginal communities to connect three transformer stations, increasing capacity and maintaining supply reliability in the region west of Thunder Bay, in northwestern Ontario. It includes a new 200 km double-circuit 230 kV transmission line between Thunder Bay and Atikokan, and a single-circuit line of the same voltage and length between Atikokan and Dryden. These developments are significant for the three substations that will be upgraded, and will bring revenue and power supply reliability benefits to the region.

Our experts provided comprehensive engineering services for this project, including system studies for all three stations, design and engineering of the new 230 kV PCT building, and design services for the in situ replacement of 230 kV components. An ambitious project involving a series of major works to establish a reliable and sustainable power infrastructure in often hostile environments, while reducing dependence on diesel generators, encouraging sustainable development and improving the quality of life of local populations.
