L'aéroport de La Grande-Rivière est une infrastructure de transport clé pour le Québec et pour les communautés cris de la Baie-James.

The Engineering structures and road infrastructure team has been commissioned to supervise the rehabilitation work to be carried out in 2025 and 2026 at La Grande-Rivière airport, near Radisson, in Northern Quebec. Our teams in Materials Engineering and Pavement, Design – Road Infrastructures, Planning & Environment, Lighting and Electricity, Surveying and Data Acquisition, as well as specialized airport resources from the Artelia Group, will also contribute to this mandate.

La Grande-Rivière airport is a key transportation infrastructure for Quebec and the Cree communities of James Bay. It serves as the main connection point for employees of Hydro-Québec’s La Grande complex, as a logistical base for SOPFEU in fighting forest fires, and as a major economic driver for the region.

To improve and maintain its infrastructure, the Société de développement de la Baie-James called on our teams to supervise the rehabilitation of the runway, apron and taxiways, to upgrade the drainage systems for pavement structures, the edge lighting systems, the earthworks, the reprofiling of ditches and the marking and temporary signage.

In addition to monitoring these works, Artelia will be responsible for ensuring that the contractor complies with contractual requirements, including verifying and monitoring the weighing of granular materials and compiling quantities for progressive settlement.

Protecting an ecosystem

The James Bay Lowlands natural province is unique in Quebec, with 58% of its surface area covered by wetlands. The vast, flat, poorly drained lands have formed large peat bogs that dominate the landscape. To maintain the balance of this ecosystem, it is essential that work complies with current environmental standards, laws and regulations. Particular attention will be paid to bodies of water close to the runway. Our environmental experts, dedicated to protecting ecosystems and improving practices, will ensure compliance with the environmental standards applicable to the project.

We are proud to contribute to this infrastructure project, which is essential to guaranteeing access and safety throughout the Nord-du-Québec region.
